Season of Creation Outdoor Prayer Service: Immersed in Living Water

Join us for a Golden Hour Prayer Service at Kirkwood Park on Sept 2, 2026, to celebrate Season of Creation

Gather your friends and join the Franciscan Sisters of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in prayer to celebrate the 2026 Season of Creation. The Season of Creation is an annual ecumenical celebration of prayer and action to nurture and protect God’s Creation. It runs from September 1 (World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation) to October 4 (the Feast of St Francis of Assisi). St Francis was not only the founder and Patron Saint of Franciscans, he is also the Patron Saint of Ecology, due to his profound connection with nature, animals, and all of God’s Creation during his lifetime.

We will meet and pray during the golden hour at Walker Lake within Kirkwood Park in Kirkwood, MO, on Wednesday, September 2. Our service will begin at 6:30 in the evening. The theme of our prayer service will be Immersed in Living Water. All are asked to bring a refillable, reusable, sustainable, water bottle filled with tap water to participate with us in simple rituals.

The overall theme for Season of Creation in 2026 is Living Water. According to the Season of Creation website, the Biblical text is drawn from Ezekiel 47:9,12. Wherever it flows, the river teems with every kind of living creature; fish will abound. Where these waters flow they refresh; everything lives where the river goes. Along each bank of the river every kind of fruit tree will grow; their leaves will not wither, nor will their fruit fail. Every month they will bear fresh fruit because the waters of the river flow out from the sanctuary. Their fruit is used for food, and their leaves for healing.

This vision invites human responsibility. We are to recognize ecological damage and embrace interconnectedness. We are to immerse ourselves — to actively safeguard and work for the renewal of Creation so that environmental healing and human well-being may flourish together. The Season of Creation grew out of the Orthodox tradition and was officially adopted by the Catholic Church by Pope Francis in 2015 following his environmental encyclical, Laudato Si’. Within the encyclical, Catholics are invited to focus on “integral ecology” by engaging in prayer, sustainability projects, and advocacy for both the “cry of the earth and the cry of those who are poor.”
Prayer service attendees will meet at the lake parking lot in Kirkwood Park and proceed to Walker Lake together. Enter Kirkwood Park from Geyer Road or Monroe Avenue for easiest access. See the red star on the map for our intended gathering location. The area we will use is wheelchair accessible and only a short distance from the parking lot. All are welcome.

Register at www.fsolph.org/events/ (We do ask that you please sign up with complete information, so that we can contact you in case of inclement weather. This also allows us to send you an email reminder one day and one hour before the event.)

Upon registration, you will receive an email response that contains the map to our meeting location. Please save and flag/star the email response, so you can find it the evening of May 28. The prayer service begins at 6:30, but we ask everyone to plan to arrive by 6:20 in case there are difficulties finding our group. We will try to send email reminders containing the map to registrants one day and one hour before the event. We have heard, however, that sometimes these do not go through.

This event is free and sponsored by the Franciscan Sisters of Our Lady of Perpetual Help through their Franciscans For Earth (FFE) movement outreach.
